Home Neglected Parasitic Diseases Drug Development Consortium News Contact University of St Andrews PI, Terry Smith. Founded in 1413, St Andrews is one of the English-speaking world’s oldest universities. It has an established reputation as one of Europe's leading centres for teaching and research. USTA has built-for-purpose modern laboratories (8000 m2) where state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary approaches are undertaken by groups from Physics, Medicine, Biology and Chemistry working alongside each other focused on various aspects of infection and immunity sharing cutting-edge facilities. Additional facilities are available through the Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance and EASTChem Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) PI: Anabela Cordiero da Silva IBMC is a multidisciplinary research institution that was formed in 1997 with the aim of bringing together researchers working within the University of Porto and affiliated hospitals to produce a unique environment promoting research in the life sciences. IBMC makes available to its researchers a number of core facilities including Advanced Microscopy, Advanced Tissue Analysis, Protein Production and Purification, Cell Culture and Genotyping, Flow Cytometry and a fully state regulated Animal Facility. University of California, San Fransisco PI, James McKerrow The UCSF promotes a vast research effort that is exclusively focused on health. Exceptional scientists, trainees and staff, are encouraged to embrace the pervasive spirit of collaboration and entrepreneurship. The preeminent faculty conduct scientific research at the genetic, cellular, molecular and systems level, where they are unmasking the fundamental mechanisms of biology and discovering new solutions for preventing and treating a wide array of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, cancer, diabetes, genetic disorders, immunological and infectious disease, and reproductive and developmental disorders. UCSF was first among public institutions nationwide in research support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2011, garnering a total of $532.8 million. UCSF received 1,056 grants last year, totaling $532.8 million for research and training, fellowships and other awards. Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute PI; Pascal Maser The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH; www.swisstph.ch) is a public institution associated with the University of Basel. Founded in 1943, the Swiss TPH aims to achieve significant improvements of human health and well-being through a better understanding of disease- and health systems and act on this knowledge. Its guiding principle is to work in interdisciplinary partnership to respond to local, national and international public health priorities, seeking solutions through needs for innovation (discovery through promotion and testing of hypotheses), validation (evidence providing what works) and application (strengthening individual and public health actions, systems and policies). CEA: Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission PI: Alain Pruvost The drug metabolism research laboratory (LEMM) is based in Saclay, France as part of the CEA (Centre for Atomic Energy). The laboratory proposes its expertise in bioanalysis and in vitro models for drug studies in partnership with the industry and academic partners. LEMM is accredited by the French Authorities (Afssaps) for the Good Laboratory Practice. Themes for scientific research include: the development of mass spectrometry assay for recombinant proteins, the development of original methods for the detection of biological warfare, drug metabolism and inhibition studies, pharmacokinetics of HIV drugs and development of in vitro models (transporters and blood brain barrier). Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany PI: Helge Bode Goethe University Frankfurt founded in 1914, is one of the top international research universities in Germany. It offers a wide variety of academic programmes and houses a diverse group of research institutes with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to solving complex problems. The university is named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Frankfurt-born polymath renowned for his exceptional contributions to literature, science and philosophy. Goethe University is one of the only universities in Germany that enjoys significant public funding alongside administrative autonomy and the ability to create a private endowment. Univerity Paris Descartes (CNRS) PI: Jerome Estaquier, With its nine training and research departments (UFR) and its Institute of Technology (IUT), Paris Descartes University encompasses all the fields of knowledge of human and health sciences. It is the only university of the Ile-de-France region to offer medical, pharmaceutical and odontological studies; its health department is renowned worldwide for the high quality of its training and the excellence of its research.
